Cass City Holds Off Vassar in 33-30 Thriller

VASSAR, Mich. — The Cass City Red Hawks and Vassar Vulcans delivered one of the more entertaining games of the early 2026 football season Thursday night, with Cass City escaping Vassar with a 33-30 victory.

Both teams entered the matchup riding strong Week 1 performances. Vassar had opened the season with an impressive 68-6 victory over Carrollton, while Cass City blanked Harbor Beach 34-0. That set the stage for a much closer battle between two teams looking to establish themselves early in the season.

The game lived up to the expectations, with neither team able to pull away for good.

Cass City ultimately did enough in the decisive moments to secure the three-point victory and move to 2-0 on the season. Vassar, meanwhile, dropped to 1-1 despite putting together another strong offensive performance.

For the Vulcans, the result was a frustrating finish to what had been an encouraging start. Vassar entered the contest with considerable momentum after putting up 68 points in its opener, and the offense again showed it could compete with a quality opponent.

Vassar's rushing attack had been particularly impressive in Week 1. Against Carrollton, the Vulcans totaled 238 rushing yards, led by Blake Karr's 179 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Madix Gorleski also contributed through the air, throwing for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Cass City, however, demonstrated that it could win in a very different type of game.

After dominating Harbor Beach 34-0 in its opener, the Red Hawks faced a much tougher challenge against Vassar. Rather than relying on a comfortable lead, Cass City had to withstand a back-and-forth contest and make enough plays late to protect a narrow advantage.

The victory also continued Cass City's recent success in the series. The Red Hawks had won the previous seven meetings between the programs entering Thursday's game.

A Sign of Things to Come

The 33-30 final could prove significant for both programs as the season moves forward.

For Cass City, the victory provides an early test of its ability to win close games. The Red Hawks are now 2-0 and have already demonstrated two different ways to win: a dominant defensive performance against Harbor Beach followed by a high-scoring battle with Vassar.

For Vassar, the loss shouldn't erase the positives from the first two weeks. The Vulcans have scored 98 points through their first two games and have shown plenty of offensive firepower. The next challenge will be finding ways to turn that production into victories against increasingly competitive opponents.

Vassar will travel to face Reese on Sept. 11, while Cass City will return home to host Unionville-Sebewaing the same night. Both teams enter those games with plenty to build on from an exciting Week 2 matchup.

For Cass City, Thursday's 33-30 victory was another step toward an undefeated start.

For Vassar, it was a narrow setback — but one that showed the Vulcans can compete in a high-level, high-scoring football game.

With conference play approaching, both teams have plenty of football still ahead of them.
