CASS CITY, Mich. — The Cass City RedHawks opened the 2026 football season with a statement Thursday night, overwhelming the defending Division 8 state champion Harbor Beach Pirates 34–0 in front of their home crowd.

What was expected to be a challenging Week 1 matchup quickly turned into a dominant performance by Cass City on both sides of the football.

Harbor Beach entered the game with plenty of credibility. The Pirates were coming off a state championship season and were ranked significantly higher than Cass City in MaxPreps' preseason Michigan rankings. Yet none of that mattered once the two teams stepped onto the field.

Cass City controlled the game from start to finish.

First Quarter — RedHawks Set the Tone

From the opening possessions, Cass City's physical style was evident.

The RedHawks established their offense by attacking Harbor Beach's defense on the ground and forcing the Pirates to defend the entire field. Cass City's ability to stay ahead of the chains allowed the RedHawks to control the tempo rather than letting Harbor Beach dictate the game.

On the other side of the ball, Cass City's defense came out aggressive and disciplined. The RedHawks consistently limited Harbor Beach's ability to sustain drives, setting the tone for what would eventually become a shutout.

Coming out of halftime, Cass City showed no signs of letting up.

Instead of playing conservatively with the lead, the RedHawks continued to pressure Harbor Beach.

The Pirates needed an early second-half score to create some momentum, but Cass City's defense wouldn't give it to them.

Harbor Beach was held scoreless throughout the game, marking the first time the Pirates had been shut out since 2022 — a remarkable stretch of 44 games without being held off the scoreboard.

That statistic puts Cass City's defensive performance into perspective.

This wasn't simply a good defensive night.

It was one of the most impressive defensive performances Harbor Beach had experienced in years.

Fourth Quarter — RedHawks Finish the Job

With the game firmly in Cass City's control, the fourth quarter became a matter of finishing.

That is especially important against Harbor Beach. The Pirates have been one of the Thumb's most successful programs, and allowing them to dictate the tempo can create problems quickly.

Cass City instead controlled the line of scrimmage, kept the pressure on and forced Harbor Beach to play from behind.

3. The RedHawks came prepared

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect for Cass City fans was the team's preparation.

This wasn't a lucky victory or a game decided by one or two plays.

Cass City won 34–0.

MaxPreps noted that the victory came despite Harbor Beach being ranked considerably higher entering the matchup, making the result even more eye-opening.

4. A different story from last year's matchup

The victory also represented a dramatic turnaround from last season.

Harbor Beach defeated Cass City 42–8 during the 2025 season before going on to win the Division 8 state championship.

This time, Cass City flipped the script completely.

The RedHawks didn't just get revenge.

They dominated.

Cass City starts the 2026 season 1–0 and will hit the road next week to face Vassar, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. Harbor Beach, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when it travels to Caro.

The RedHawks have every reason to be confident after Thursday's performance.

They beat the defending state champions.

They scored 34 points.
