Vassar Shatters School Records in 74-18 Rout of Bridgeport, Clinches Playoff Berth
Blake Karr sets two individual school records as the Vulcans erupt for a program-record 74 points, securing their spot in the MHSAA state playoffs.
VASSAR, MI — The Vassar Vulcans varsity football team delivered a record-breaking offensive performance Friday, October 23, overwhelming the Bridgeport Bearcats 74-18 in a historic victory that secured Vassar's place in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state playoffs.
The Vulcans found the end zone nine times and added a safety, putting together a dominant scoring effort that rewrote the program's record books. Vassar's 74 points established a new school record for points scored in a single game, surpassing a mark the team had already set earlier this season.
While the entire team contributed to the historic victory, Blake Karr stole the spotlight with a record-setting 38-point performance, breaking two individual school records in the process.
Karr accounted for four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 21, 5 and 1 yards while also returning a kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown. He added seven successful two-point conversions, bringing his individual scoring total to 38 points.
The performance broke Vassar's previous single-game scoring record of 36 points, a mark shared by Dan Smith, who accomplished the feat in 2002, and Ricardo Macon, who matched it in 2019.
Karr also established a new school record for points scored in a season, bringing his total to 134 points. The previous record of 119 points had been held by Mike Pratt since 2015.
Karr's contributions extended beyond the scoreboard, as he led Vassar's rushing attack with 136 yards on 18 carries.
However, Karr was far from the only Vulcan producing big plays.
Carmelo Poe matched Karr with four touchdowns of his own, providing an explosive combination of rushing, receiving and special teams production. Poe scored on runs of 24 and 4 yards, hauled in a 32-yard touchdown reception and electrified the field with a 76-yard kickoff return for another score.
Poe also added two successful two-point conversions, accounting for 28 points. He finished as Vassar's leading receiver with two catches for 35 yards.
Quarterback Madix Gorleski joined the scoring barrage with a 13-yard touchdown run, while Nic Folino contributed two points by recording a safety.
Together, the four Vulcans accounted for all 74 points in one of the most impressive offensive performances in program history.
Beyond the records and individual achievements, the victory carried significant postseason implications. With the win, Vassar officially secured a berth in the MHSAA state playoffs, extending its season and earning an opportunity to compete for a state championship.
For a Vulcan squad that has demonstrated explosive offensive potential throughout the season, Friday's performance served as an emphatic statement heading into postseason competition.
