Vulcans Battle Lakers in Four-Set Match
The Vassar Vulcans showed plenty of fight Saturday night, battling a strong Lakers squad through four sets before ultimately falling 3-1.
Vassar faced an early challenge in the opening set, dropping the first frame 25-12. Rather than letting the difficult start dictate the rest of the match, the Vulcans responded with a strong second-set performance.
Vassar controlled the second set and came away with a 25-20 victory, evening the match at one set apiece and shifting the momentum back in their favor.
The third set proved to be a competitive battle from beginning to end. The Vulcans stayed within striking distance throughout the set, but the Lakers managed to pull away late and take the frame 25-21.
With the match on the line in the fourth set, Vassar continued to battle. The Vulcans fought hard but were unable to force a fifth set, falling 25-17 as the Lakers closed out the match, 3-1.
McCloud Leads Offensive Attack
Maya McCloud led the Vulcans offensively with an impressive 13 kills on 38 hits. She also contributed seven digs, two aces and four blocks, making an impact across multiple areas of the court.
Jayla Kus anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 33 digs, helping keep rallies alive throughout the match.
Athena Fernandez added 16 digs, one kill and three hits, while Eva Hecht recorded 15 digs, one kill, 10 hits and two assists.
Shaylee Cerda contributed six digs, one kill, three hits, two aces and a team-high 11 assists. Emily Bellamy added one dig, one kill, four hits and two aces, while Karmin LaRose finished with two hits.
Despite the 3-1 loss, Vassar's ability to respond after the opening set and win the second showed the competitiveness of the Vulcans. The team continued to battle through the final two sets, demonstrating resilience against a strong Lakers team.
Vassar will look to build on that effort as the season continues, with the experience of competing in a hard-fought four-set match providing another opportunity for the young squad to grow.
