Vulcans Explode in Second Half, Roll Past Reese 46-18

Vassar erases a six-point halftime deficit with 34 unanswered points as the defense shuts out the Rockets over the final two quarters.

VASSAR — A six-point halftime deficit quickly turned into a commanding victory Friday night as the Vassar Vulcans dominated the second half to defeat the Reese Rockets, 46-18.

Vassar entered halftime trailing 18-12, but the Vulcans flipped the game after the break. The defense shut out Reese over the final two quarters while the offense erupted for 34 unanswered points to pull away.

Quarterback Madix Gorleski was at the center of Vassar's offensive surge, accounting for five touchdowns through the air and on the ground.

Gorleski scored on runs of 74 and 4 yards and threw three touchdown passes. He connected with Cole Nickerson for a 19-yard score, Blake Karr for a 17-yard touchdown and Kris Cerda for a 26-yard score.

Carmelo Poe added a 14-yard touchdown run, while Karr found the end zone on a 5-yard run. Gorleski and Poe also each converted a two-point attempt.

Gorleski finished 13-of-25 passing for 151 yards and three touchdowns while adding a team-high 120 rushing yards on 12 carries. His performance gave Vassar 271 yards of total offense from the quarterback position alone.

Karr contributed 68 rushing yards on 12 carries in addition to his rushing and receiving touchdowns.

Cerda led Vassar's receivers with three catches for 48 yards, including his 26-yard touchdown reception. Poe added four receptions for 32 yards to go along with his rushing touchdown.

Defense Takes Over

While Vassar's offense produced the points, the Vulcans' second-half defense changed the complexion of the game.

After Reese scored 18 points in the opening half, Vassar held the Rockets to just 36 total yards in the second half and did not allow another point.

Gary DeKalita led the defensive effort with a game-high 14 tackles. Nickerson recorded nine tackles, while Gaven Kilgore finished with eight.

The Vulcans also created problems in the Reese backfield and forced multiple turnovers. Nick Folino recorded two sacks, while Poe and Kilgore each intercepted a pass. Wyatt Smith added a fumble recovery.

The combination of stops and takeaways gave Vassar's offense repeated opportunities to take control, and the Vulcans capitalized by scoring 34 consecutive points after halftime.

Key Takeaways

Vassar dominated after halftime. The biggest story was the turnaround over the final two quarters. After trailing 18-12, Vassar outscored Reese 34-0 in the second half.

Gorleski delivered a dual-threat performance. With 151 passing yards and 120 rushing yards, Gorleski accounted for 271 total yards and five touchdowns, giving Reese problems both through the air and on the ground.

The Vulcans' defense slammed the door. Reese was limited to only 36 yards of offense in the second half. Vassar also recorded two interceptions, a fumble recovery and two sacks.

Vassar spread the scoring around. Four Vulcans found the end zone, with Gorleski, Karr, Poe, Nickerson and Cerda all contributing to scoring plays. That balance made Vassar difficult to contain once the offense found its rhythm.
