Vulcans Make a Statement in Season Opener, Roll Past Carrollton 68-6

VASSAR, Mich. — The Vassar Vulcans wasted little time announcing that they came ready to play in 2026.

Opening the season at home Thursday night, Vassar jumped on the Carrollton Cavaliers early and never let up, cruising to a 68-6 victory in a non-conference matchup. The win sent the Vulcans into Week 2 with a 1-0 record, while Carrollton dropped to 0-1.

From the opening quarter, Vassar's offense was in complete control.

The Vulcans exploded for 28 points in the first quarter, while their defense completely shut down the Cavaliers. Carrollton couldn't find an answer for Vassar's early offensive pressure, and the home team quickly turned the game into a one-sided affair.

A 58-6 Halftime Lead

The second quarter proved to be even more damaging for Carrollton.

Vassar continued piling up points, adding 30 points in the second quarter alone. Carrollton finally managed to get on the scoreboard with six points, but the Cavaliers still found themselves facing a massive 58-6 deficit at halftime.

At that point, the outcome was essentially decided.

Vassar's ability to score consistently throughout the first half was the biggest difference in the game. The Vulcans weren't simply putting together one or two successful drives — they were repeatedly turning opportunities into points and forcing Carrollton to play from an enormous deficit.

Vulcans Finish Strong

With the game firmly in hand, the pace slowed considerably after halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Vassar added another 10 points in the fourth quarter to finish off the 68-6 victory.

What Stood Out

The most impressive part of Vassar's performance was its start.

Scoring 28 points in the opening quarter immediately put Carrollton in catch-up mode. Once Vassar established that advantage, the Cavaliers had little room for error.

The Vulcans then doubled down in the second quarter, producing another 30 points and turning a four-score game into a 52-point halftime advantage.

Defensively, Vassar was equally impressive. Carrollton was held scoreless in the first, third and fourth quarters and managed only six points all night. That kind of defensive consistency gives Vassar a strong foundation moving forward.

Of course, one game doesn't guarantee a successful season. The competition will get tougher, and the Vulcans will have to prove they can maintain that level of execution against teams capable of matching their physicality and pace.

But as season openers go, this was about as convincing as it gets.

Next Up: Cass City

Vassar won't have to wait long for another test.

The Vulcans return to action Thursday, Sept. 3, at home against the Cass City Red Hawks, who also opened their season with a victory, defeating Harbor Beach 34-0.

That matchup should provide a much different challenge for Vassar and will offer an early opportunity to see how the Vulcans respond when the game is more competitive.

For now, though, Vassar can enjoy an impressive opening-night performance.
